ID keskustelussa nousee usein esille Darwinin oma henkilökohtainen usko Jumalaan ja ajatukset ateismista. Eräs tärkeä ajatus on, olisiko hyvä Jumala luonut kissan leikkimään hiirellä?
Kuuluisa teksti on Darwinin henkilökohtaisesta kirjeestä Asa Graylle 22.5. 1860, jossa hän keskustelee kirjan saamasta julkisuudesta ja palautteesta. Teologit kirjoittivat jo tuohon aikaan ankarasti häntä vastaan.

"With respect to the theological view of the question; this is always painful to me.— I am bewildered.— I had no intention to write atheistically. But I own that I cannot see, as plainly as others do, & as I shd wish to do, evidence of design & beneficence on all sides of us. There seems to me too much misery in the world. PoistaDarwin kirjeessä kuvaa myös syvää hämmennystään ja epätietoisuuttaan. Vaimonsa oli uskova kristitty ja kovin huolissaan miehensä kirjoituksista

VastaaPoistaTuo Darwinin pohdinta on jotenkin niin järisyttävän vaikuttavaa, että melkein pitäisi jättää siihen mitään kommentoimatta.
VastaaPoistaMutta jos nyt kuitenkin: tuli mieleeni yhdistää tuo Darwinin ajatus siitä, että yksityiskohdat, hyvät tai pahat, on jätetty ikään kuin 'vapaasti muotoutuvaksi' (chance) Mikon edellisen artikkelin tuumailuihin "Jumalan suunnitelma ei ihmislajin kohdalla toteutunut itsestään, automaattisesti, jonkin taivaallisen blue printin, kaavion design patterns mukaan."
Ehkä Mikolla olikin mielessään, että tämä sama voisi koskea lajien kehittymistä?
Juuri niin, raamatullinen jumalakuva näkyy Raamatun teksteissä, ja me saamme uskoa olleemme Taivaan Isän ajatuksissa jo ennen maailmankaikkeuden luomista.
PoistaTieteellisen tutkimuksen meille Kirjoitusten ihmisille on paljolti siinä, että Jumala osoittautuu paljon suuremmaksi kuin olemme ajatelleetkaan ja silti välittää jokaisesta varousestakin ja kaarneenpojasta.
Voimme reilusti tunnustaa, että Israelin Jumala - ainoa todellinen Jumala - on uskomattoman suuri.
